I don’t remember when I started using a snell knot but for live bait and dead bait fishing it’s made the difference for me. I used to use a loop knot for everything until losing fish got old. I changed it up to a snell knot, strapped a sardine to it and chucked it back into the mix. I haven’t stop using it since. I like using it for several reasons but a few are why I believe it to be the best. It holds the hook in line with the leader and reduces fouling of the bait. I would love to have a chance at the fish I’ve missed for this reason alone. The second reason would be a straighter hook at the point of hook set. Third is the way it makes live bait struggle against the leader tension giving the bait an injured appearance. Fourth and just as important as the others is knot strength at the hook. I believe the energy is better displaced along the neck of the hook versus the eye of the hook. Snell up the place the next time your out and see for yourself it doesn’t stink.
