Just before Christmas was my second attempt at catching a trophy striped bass from my kayak.. I left just after work and made the 45 minute trip across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. I arrived at Kiptopeake State Park along with Kayak Kevin and several others. I loaded up the kayak with video equipment, live eels and a few Rip Tide 5-inch mullets.
Several kayak anglers set up on the pound net poles just south of the ships. We dropped our eels and waited there until the sun set. Just after sunset Chad Hoover from Kayak BassFishing.com had a run and after about 15 minutes landed this 51.5-inch Kiptopeake Kow. Out of about 20 kayakanglers he was the only angler to catch a fish during that slack tide.
The bite here is getting better but will lull again as water temps drop below 40 degrees. It is a very erratic fishery and getting there at the right time will affect catches. HAppy Holidays!
