Product Review-YETI Coolers

by Capt. Jot Owens on August 19, 2010

Post image for Product Review-YETI Coolers

Coolers… We have all owned some in the past, currently own some and will probably buy more in the future.  Most of us know that most coolers last two to three years at best.  So when do you say that is good enough?  When you find a cooler that out lasts the rest! That’s when.  I have found the cooler that will change everything you think you know about coolers. It’s the YETI cooler. [Read Full Article]

Product Review – Accurate 7″ Piranha Pliers

by Capt. Clay Eavenson on August 9, 2010

I contacted a few plier companies a while back because I was in need of a pair that wouldn’t rust up and become unusable after a few weeks. I’m just tired of spending $15-40 on pliers that can’t handle the abuse that I and saltwater can dish out. Accurate was the first company to respond and they sent me a pair of their premium, 7″ Piranha pliers; along with a holser and lanyard.

At first look, these things are sexy. They’re shiny and light, thanks to their highly polished all aluminum frame, yet they feel very sturdy. They have replaceable jaws and cutters and opening action on them is spring loaded. The (highly recommended) holster/sheath is form molded to fit the pliers snugly yet they are easy to remove. The lanyard seems very durble and coiled for easy retraction.

I’ve been using the Piranha’s for about 4 months now and I’ve really enjoyed them. Any time that I forget them and leave them at the house I miss them for sure. They’ve held up very well mechanically and functionally and my only complaint is that whatever the material is that they use for the jaws doesn’t seem to be very rust proof when used in saltwater. It didn’t take very long to get some surface rust on the jaws. Keep in mind this hasn’t affected their performance one bit, it’s just a little peeve of mine. The cutters have held up well even though I’ve abused the snot out of them. I’ve been cutting everything from mono to crab claws and they still cut fine braid just fine.

If you’re looking for a really well built pair of pliers that are impervious to salt (minus cosmetic surface rust on the jaws), this is a great pair of pliers and well worth the $100+ price tag.

Tackle Review: “Mirrodine 17MR”

by Capt. C.A. Richardson on July 31, 2010

Post image for Tackle Review: “Mirrodine 17MR”

Over the years I have field tested and reported on dozens of quality hard baits… but the one plug that has gained my respect the most is the Mirrodine 17MR.  This little compact suspending twitch bait is absolutely perfect for fishing shallow water and allows my clients to catch trout, redfish, and snook with just one lure… I call it the “Slam Bait” on my boat! Post image for Product Review-Berkley Gulp Ripple Mullet and Gulp Alive Ripple Mullet

Most anglers (salt & fresh) have used a Berkley Gulp or Gulp Alive products in the past and have had luck with Gulp.  The one thing I’ve experienced as well as other fishermen have told me is that Gulp does not have enough action.  The Berkley Company listened and has come out with the Gulp and Gulp Alive Ripple Mullet; with the first Gulp product to ever have a firetail design. Product Spotlight – Frogg Toggs Chilly Pad

Post image for Product Spotlight – Frogg Toggs Chilly Pad

The summer heat is upon us here in West Central Florida and I have been trying to find ways to cool down while tarpon fishing. I’ve bought a beach umbrella to put in a rod holder so I can catch some shade but the wind thwarts my efforts. It blows the thing inside out with any breeze over 10knts. My wife bought me a wide brim hat, which is nice and it helps with the sun, but it traps heat around my face when the wind isn’t blowing. She also bought me a spray bottle with a battery powered fan. That works great until you run out of fresh water or the batteries die.

Post image for Product Review: The Edje Jighead

There are certain conditions where weedless lures are not just an advantage, they’re critical to having any chance at all to get a gamefish to eat your lure.   For just about every hook or lure company, they have come out with their own version of a weighted, weedless lure.    This is a look at “The Edje”, one weedless option that is produced and marketed by Captain Joe Hebert.    [Read Full Article]
